February 2018 Shirt: A Whisper

Man, this “remember to make new shirts every month” thing is hard. I definitely blew my self imposed deadline for this shirt by about three days, but I eventually remembered!

Anyway, I always preferred this comic in black and white. I wasn’t thrilled with my colours on it, and it kind of muted the fact that I tried to put as many lines on this drawing as possible. I think I wrecked a brush pen with this one page. Don’t let that brush pen’s sacrifice have been for nothing: you can get this new design in a wide variety of colors on different types of merchandise!

Nathan.

A couple of years ago, my friend Nathan had a very serious workplace accident. He’s fine now, but at the time he was rushed to the hospital, and even elected to have a pretty significant surgery to hopefully prevent any future health problems.

It was a really scary moment, because until then (and luckily not since then) I had never received a phone call like that. Where you suddenly find out terrible news about someone you care about. Information was scarce at first, and thankfully we quickly learned he was okay, but in that time in between all I could think about was how I had just seen him the day before, and just like that without any warning something awful had happened. It was surreal.

Anyway, apparently while he was in the hospital absolutely out of his mind on pain killers, he came to, looked at our friend Randy and said something along the lines of “I want one of Nick’s new shirts. The white one. In large.” That was it. He then just kind of nodded off again. I was pretty flattered to be honest.

So naturally I got him one.

He’s pictured here, wearing another one of my shirts he bought for himself as well. Hell of a guy.

Light and Darkness.

Back in January of 2016, I did a three part story called “Light.” I had always intended to do a follow up story shortly thereafter, but it wasn’t until September of 2017 that I started work on the sequel “Darkness” which ran for seven parts and an epilogue (although the epilogue was mostly used to explain another costume change for Life.)

One of the things I’ve done several times with my comic so far is to revisit an idea. Usually just one panel or even just a position, nothing major. It might come off as repetitive if it’s pointed out, but the real reason I do it is just to see if I can draw it better the next time.

Normally I try not to be too obvious when I’m revisiting an idea, but for one of the first panels of Darkness, I flat out just redrew one of the panels of Light (I had also hoped that this would jog people’s memories that this was in fact a sequel.) Here’s the result:

I don’t particularly go back and look at my older work from a critical point of view, but because this is essentially the same panel, the differences are pretty glaring. I think there is a pretty marked improvement in my drawing, and I feel really proud of that.

I often remark that when I started work on Life The Necropolis, I had given up drawing for 15 years, and even then I never bothered to learn the fundamentals of comic art when I was still drawing. I really had my work cut out for me, but I figured that if I just kept practicing making comics, logically (and hopefully) I would seemingly have to get better at it by default.

Here’s a couple of other examples from the two stories that I feel show my improvement:

Oh, and also I’m not sure how many people noticed, but I drew all of Darkness (except for the epilogue) in four widescreen panels per page. It was kind of interesting forcing myself into this format and certainly proved challenging. It also kind of made drawing backgrounds a real pain in the ass, so I usually just didn’t.

Inktober 2017.

At the encouragement of my friend Phil, this year I decided to participate in an online art project called Inktober. Do a drawing every day all October long. They give you drawing prompts to use if you’d like, which is why there’s a word at the bottom of every drawing.

It was a fair bit of work, but I’m really glad I did it because it gave me a reason to practice drawing more, and it also gave me a couple of new story ideas.

But yeah, things got weird sometimes, particularly near the end. It got to the point where I was so out of ideas I would just listen to some Hawkwind, and draw the first thing that came to mind. That’s where that little wizard guy came from. A bunch of the drawings ended up kind of screwy and I made a bunch of mistakes, but I wasn’t too worried because it was good practice, and I learn better from seeing my own mistakes.

Oh, and also: a bunch of the drawings are super phallic because I thought it would make Phil laugh, and it reminded me of the old Heavy Metal magazines. Seemed like good enough reasons at the time.
